The FDX half sleeve jersey and bib shorts set has to be one of the best cycling purchases I have made. Bought in tandem with the FDX winter set, I was looking for something cheap that looked good. Having previously worn Muddyfox clothing bought from Sports Direct, I wanted something a little bit more stylish and functional, but couldn’t afford the £70+ price tag on the known brand clothing. FDX did not let me down.
Available in three colours – blue, red and yellow – the jersey has a full zip up the front which makes it great for opening up in the hot weather or when dealing with a particularly troublesome hill. With three separate pocket pouches on the rear, plus a zip pocket within the pouches, there has never been a time I haven’t been able to comfortably carry everything I need. In fact, there have been times I have filled the pockets too much, purely because the space was there.
The arm cuffs are slightly elasticated and have a rubber like texture inside, which means that the sleeves don’t ride up or flap around – they gently hug your arm and don’t go anywhere. Finally, the design on the top is interesting enough to appear stylish, without being too gaudy.
The bib shorts are fine. Featuring the same elasticated/rubbery cuffs, they come to about mid-thigh and are nice and comfortable. The pad is ample enough and I have comfortably completed many 70+ mile sportives in this set without wishing I had a thicker pad/more impervious buttocks. Again, the design works – not too flashy and not too simple.
Having expected for this cycling set to only last a few months, I have been more than pleased to still be using it two years on as my main cycling outfit. There has been no noticeable fading, no sagging of material and no tears.
There are a few downsides to this set. Although obviously long lasting, the material does feel a little on the cheap side when compared to some of the name brand clothing. Additionally, the bib shorts don’t have a zip opening, which means toilet stops can be a hassle. To be fair, very few bib shorts have a zip, so it is a frequent problem rather than a specific one.
This set is available on Amazon for a very pocket friendly price of around £35, depending on size. It arrived promptly and was packaged as you would expect for this price. Functional but nothing amazing. All in all the FDX half sleeve jersey and bib shorts set is a worthwhile investment that will be pleasantly surprising rather than financially draining.
